Australian software giant Atlassian will no longer require its employees to return to an office for work, even after the end of coronavirus-related shutdowns.

Atlassian employees can choose to work wherever they want, whether at home, in an office, or a combination of the two, the company announced Friday. Atlassian’s news comes on the heels of similar decisions by Twitter and Facebook to switch to a permanently divided working model.

Atlassian, headquartered in Australia, has offices around the world and it had some staff who were completely remote even before the pandemic. The company has plans to work through its offices, instead of going for one fully remote model like the startups GitLab and Zapier. However, the switch allows it to expand its recruitment efforts outside regions where it has erected buildings. Atlassian says this can help the company search for “amazing, diverse talent without boundaries due to the physical footprint of our offices.”

“We believe the post-COVID world will see an increase in dispersed work in all sectors, and we want to lead this for ourselves and our customers,” Scott Farquhar, co-CEO and co-founder of Atlassian, wrote in an internal blogpost. “Our products help teams work together from everywhere, and our practices and learning can help our customers in the future of working with us. But we can not coach from the sidelines, we have to run the course – one kilometer ahead of us customers. ”

The company has a market cap of more than $ 41 billion on Friday.
