Atlanta protesters launch fireworks at federal building

Atlanta Black Lives Matter protesters smashed a federal building with fireworks and smashed windows as they brought out their anger at an immigration office there on Saturday, according to reports.

Protesters smashed windows and set fire outside the center building, which houses the offices of the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, while images of the protest posted on Twitter show fireworks were fired at the entrance.

“The DHS / ICE Field Office looted by border crossers in Atlanta in solidarity with #PortlandProtests freedom fighters and any other poor person who suffers trying to build a new world,” says one of the messages.

Other posts, using the hashtag #PortlandSolidarity, said protesters had fenced off a section of Ted Turner Drive overnight, WXIA-TV said.

Portland has become one of the country’s most volatile protests hotspots, with nightly clashes with police for the past two months, with federal troops now there to try to quell the violence.

On Sunday morning, Atlanta police and Georgia National Guard troops gathered in the building to gather evidence of the nighttime assault, WSB-TV reported in Atlanta.

The damage was “significant,” authorities said, with broken windows, graffiti on the facade, and charcoal marks from fires and fireworks.
