At least 13 die in Peru and run away from cops amid COVID-19 club battle

At least 13 people were killed when people tried to flee because police officers in Lima, Peru, attacked a nightclub that was open despite coronavirus restrictions, officials said.

The victims were killed or killed when about 120 people tried to escape from the Thomas Restobar club Saturday night through the only entrance door, national police and officials said.

At least six people were also injured, including three officers, as clubgoers were caught between the door and a staircase leading to the street.

“In these circumstances when people start fighting to get out, it’s tumultuous, everyone goes against each other,” National Police Orlando Velasco told local radio station RPP.

Peru tore down nightclubs and bars in March and then banned extended family gatherings on August 12, as the country struggled with the second-highest coronavirus infection area in Latin America.

The country recorded 585,236 confirmed infections as of Saturday, the number doubled on July 2, according to a Reuters census.
