Kotaku Game DiaryKotaku Game DiaryThe latest ideas from the Kotaku staff about the game we play.

Every time my Viking hero Ivor dies Assassin Creed Valhalla, He returns to life drunk. This is a known bug that developers intended to patch, but while trying to bear with it last night, I made it somewhat worse. However, in this case, “bad” means “better”. And now I’m paradoxical about whether I want to fix this.

Here’s how the bug initially played out Valhalla A few weeks ago. I will load the saved file on my Xbox and see the loading screen. Then some parts of 9th century England will appear with the Ivor, who were submerged. The graphics will be blurred, then sharpened. Then Ivor will vibrate some more.

This was strange, but tolerable. The effect of intoxication quickly subsides. Also, Ubisoft’s game designers hinted at it Valhalla‘S official support page That this was an unintentional side effect of Valhalla’s new Celebrate ulatide, One-party Ubisoft, back in the game’s Central Viking settlement in mid-December.

“Does the drunk status effect apply during and after screen loading?

Workout: Meditation or sleeping in your bed should eliminate the effects of the condition. (Or you can move it.) “

The celebration adds an option for a big tree, a large crowd of decorated people, an archery challenge and a drunken raging fight. Somehow all of this drinking-based game code got corrupted, but, I realized, it would be resolved by the time the celebration ends in January or so I hope.

This always feels like a mild intoxication, if not a good one, at least a funny, momentary discomfort, something like a passing storm. It is also an example of a type of error that may prove more common as it works more commonly on the calendar of updates: seasonal defects.

And with that I was last night, then I will write a draft of this post in anticipation of sharing Kotku An interesting, harmless mistake readers. I plan to publish this article in the morning and it will happen.

But last night, after I finished my work and put the kids to bed, I took on the load. Valhalla Back up. I decided to explore the realm of Hematunsair, designed for players at Power Level 340. My Ivor was only 170, but I realized it would be interesting to find.

On the outside, I found an enemy camp for a raid and spent half an hour trying to take it down. The enemies were actually much more hearty than my usual opponents. They hit me a bunch. Ivor temporarily kept coming back drunk, but eventually cleared his base. In the process I shot all my arrows and never locked again. (This will be important).

I went deep into the Ham Mutansair and found the marker for the side search. It involved Ivory taking a drink, except that the drink was poisoned, and all of a sudden I got the most drunken intoxication I saw in the game. My screen just didn’t blur. It turned black and white. As soon as this happened, an enemy attacked. It was very high-level for me, but I drew my bow and aimed at the weak point, except for the… arrow.

I ran. The effect was maintained in black-and-white poisoning. I kept running. The effect of general intoxication would have diminished by now. This was not. I got on my horse and rode towards the city of Winster. The effect is finally over. The ambiguity stopped. Colors returned.

I approached some of Winstree’s guards. They didn’t like my face and he killed me.

Ivor came back to life, but she wasn’t just drunk. She was – oh no! Everything was black and white and restrained.

This was not so funny. And it wasn’t crumbling. At least, fast enough is not enough.

I read that sleeping eliminates the condition of being intoxicated regularly, so I called Ivor back to his settlement, telling him to go to sleep. She woke up healthy, the colors were restored.

I made a quick trip back to Winstre, told myself to play carefully, and climbed a tall skyscraper for a city survey.

Then I jumped, hoping to get into the grass, but died thinking wrongly.

The ivory building came back to life on top of the tallest building and, you guessed it, it was poisoned again.

This was annoying, but I had an idea. Maybe the game reminded me of the latest state of my ambiguity. Maybe if I got drunk (poisonous breath) I could at least get back to a blinking life, but colored without the world. But it did not last. She was resurrected from a poisoned death.

I could travel fast for reconciliation for some Shutey after each death, but it turned out to be very cumbersome. Can I try less death? I should probably have stopped playing in such a treacherous region, but what is the joy in that? No, I needed to find a quick way to get myself intoxicated while I was stubbornly playing more quests for which I was not ready.

I made Ivar meditate. But it did not last.

Then I agreed to listen to a man about Jesus. It worked!

While I was doing all this, I saw something unexpected. Whenever I was intoxicated, Valhalla Achieved a rugged beauty. The game sounds nice in general, but removing the colors can make its light more intensely define its protagonist and the scenery around it.

I started snaping more screenshots.

I take a lot of screenshot shots Valhalla, And usually do so using the game’s photo mode. I prefer to pause the action, use the game tool, reproduce a scene, maybe zoom in or out, although I’ve never used any of its filters, including black and white. Instead, I just ran around with the whole game world in this poisoned black-and-white state, then paused to go into photo mode. As I lined up one of my shots, I discovered how the game-making magicians did this black-and-white trick.

The effect of the poison was an illusion. The game world has not turned black and white. The developers just put a filter between my character and the camera. And using the photo mode, I can see exactly how they will pull this rabbit out of the hat.

Amazing!

I can have fun with this. That filter can co-star in my screenshot shots.

It can also create some cool / interesting GIFs.

Suddenly, I was having so much fun. I realized I would miss this. I won’t miss the game by diving, but I’ll miss watching it through this filter. I would miss playing with an unexpected visual trick, and I would miss the feeling that I got into the game code and found something beautiful in the error.

Still, I want Ivor to come back to life, without ambiguity around the world. So bring it to the patch.
