Archaeologists find ancient “snack bar” in Pompeii ruins

The city of Pompeii was buried in a devastating volcanic eruption in AD, but archaeologists are still unearthing extraordinary structures in the area. On Saturday, they unveiled their new invention – a very well-preserved ancient “snack bar.”

Officials said the Reggio V’s thermopolyum would be a shop selling hot food, the equivalent of a modern-day street cart or fast-food establishment. It was partially excavated in 2019 and its completion was revealed on Saturday.

Found from the ruins, an image of Nirid climbing the coast and items like gladiators’ frescoes in battle were found. During the most recent phase of the excavations, archaeologists discovered more colorful static life scenes, including paintings of animals sold in shops such as a mord lord duck and a rooster.

There was also a depiction of a restrained dog, which appeared to serve as a warning, as well as a complete skeleton of the dog between the shop doors.

Archaeologists are still struggling to gather enough evidence before reaching the final conclusions about the nature of the dog.

“Scratches have been found on the frame of a sarcastic inscription surrounding a dog painting: Nisia Cined Casseter Literally ‘Nikias (probably a savior of Greece) shameless sh *****!’ Officials said. “This was probably left by a prankster who tried to make fun of the owner, or by someone working in a thermopolym.”

Archaeologists also found containers containing 2,000-year-old bone fragments from animals sold in the shop’s counter. Traces of pork, fish, snails and meat were found in the container, which archaeologist Valeria Amoretti said, “products of animal origin are used in the preparation of the dishes.”

In the small square in front of the shop was a fountain and a water tower. Inside the shop were nine amphores, a bronze drinking bowl called a patera, two flasks and other ceramic jars.

Human bones were also found at the scene, some attached to a 50-year-old man who was found sitting in bed when the explosion occurred.

“In addition to having another understanding of everyday life in Pompeii, the possibilities for the study of this thermopolym are exceptional, as this is the first time such an area has been excavated in its entirety, and it is possible that it will implement all things. Analyze what today’s technology allows. Is, ”said Massimo Osana of the Pompeii Archaeological Park. “These findings will be further analyzed in the laboratory, and in particular, are expected to provide exceptional data for information on what was found in the counter dolia (terracotta container), what was sold and what the diet was like.”

According to officials, Thermopolia, where the inhabitants enjoyed drinks and hot food, in ancient Rome people usually drank out of the house. Pompeii alone had 80 of them.
