Arab gas pipeline blast kills Syrian state media | World news

A possible attack on a pipeline in Syria caused a nationwide blackout a quarter of a century ago, the state news agency quoted Monday.

According to SANA news agency, electricity minister Mohammad Kharboutli said an explosion on a pipeline in the Damascus area on Sunday night “led to an electricity outage across Syria”.

The minister said the blast occurred between the suburbs of Al-Dhumayr and Adra and caused a drop in gas supplies to power stations.

Some power stations were eventually connected and power supplied to vital infrastructure, he said, adding that electricity by morning was slowly returning to various provinces.

The news agency published photos of a nightclub that it said was caused by the pipeline explosion.

The oil minister, Ali Ghanem, said the explosion on the main pipeline that supplied southern Syria “may have been caused by a terrorist act”, but he did not give further details. The 36-inch pipe delivers three stations in the south of the country, he said.
