Apple’s iPhone 12 will cause new problems for Samsung and Google

It’s hard not to be taken aback by the romance of using Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2. The novelty of using the futuristic phone that James Cameron will have at home in the film has not yet worn off for me.

But there is one missing feature that Fold 2 experiences from a fixed date: Face ID.

We all know the story of AllPal’s biometric security tech: it debuted on the iPhone X in 2017 and went beyond that. Any Android rivals for at least two years. Apple Paul prefers to briefly remind anyone who hears this, as you can see in the frequent mention of the word “advanced” on the company’s Face ID specifier site.

It’s really advanced. There is a complex setup of an ultra-delicate dot projector, flood illuminator and infrared camera, combined to create a mathematical representation of your mug.

Google acquired a version of its own, equally secure, Face Unlock (via its Soli Radar technology) on the Pixel 4 in 2019, second only to the camera, this was my closest favorite feature on this handset. Accuracy, speed and security in unlocking my phone by paying for things And Logging in to apps at a glance was a big time saver. If I like something about Google Tech, it saves me time.

But with the Pixel 5 Face Unlock locked back to the fingerprint sensor, the price has also dropped significantly. Between the Pixel 4 (99799) and the Pixel 5 (9699) there is a 100D’s, while the entry level iPhone 12 will cost as much as the Pixel 5, although the main difference is that Apple will probably include Face ID in the cheaper new. IPhone. Which gives the handset a big advantage in my books.

I see a drop in the price of the Pixel 5, especially this time. But I can’t help but mourn the loss of a true key feature in Google’s hardware lineup. I am preparing to unlock it just before I catch it before the motion of facial recognition and mute my phone. But, most importantly, I regret what Google will do with Soli on future Pixel phones. It seems that only Apple Pal will take full advantage of those future options.

The owner of a repair shop I spoke to recently, who has become a Face ID expert in recent years (more on that soon), told me that he thinks Apple’s advanced biometric security technology will be the key to its future smart home offer. That makes sense, doesn’t it? Secure and unlock your front door or your car as soon as possible. Each connected device in your home adjusts to the very look of your face in your personal settings. Big Tech AdWords, which sells us a vision of a seamless smart home that is never close to reality, may be more accurate with a future version of Face ID in the mix.

The prospect of Google marrying an assistant with its Soli Tech is also boring. The search company doesn’t just have a wide and growing range of smart home products – it appears to be rolling out new ancillary features weekly. I can imagine a hyper-personalized shared home experience where Google’s Nest Tech, Assistant and Soli come together to alleviate the pain of living with a lot of home mates. But that future vision is now only for Apple Pal.

Google’s Advanced Technology and G and Projects unit spent four years, and probably developed a lot of cash, Soli. I don’t think the Pixel 5 has its irregular benching end, but it doesn’t look good for the radar chip. For now, the Apple Pal just goes ahead with 3D facial biometric security on smartphones. Throw away its depth-scanning leader technology and there is a chance that the company will not only increase its already significant lead, but move on to a radically different hardware path for its competitors.
