Central Park, a new animated series co-created by Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard, is in the middle of Season 1, but a big change is coming for Season 2. One of the show’s characters, Molly, is a biracial young man who has, up to this point, Kristen Bell (Frozen, The Good Place), who is white, has given her the voice.
In the future, Molly’s part will be recast, and while Bell will remain on the show, she will play a new character.
In a statement from the show’s creators that Bell shared on Twitter, it is claimed that Bell was cast on the show “before there was a character for her,” but the decision to cast her as Molly was wrong.
This is a time to acknowledge our acts of complicity. Here’s 1 of mine. Playing Molly in Central Park shows a lack of awareness of my widespread privilege. After reflecting, Kristen, along with the entire creative team, recognizes that Molly’s character cast is an opportunity to get the right portrayal: choosing a black or mixed-race actress and giving Molly a voice that resonates with everyone. nuances and experiences of the character as we draw it, “says the statement.
There is also a promise that the team is “committed to creating opportunities for people of color and blacks in all roles,” including on the production side.
Bell has added his own comment, admitting that playing Molly “shows a lack of awareness of my widespread privilege.”
This occurs shortly after Jenny Slate announced that she was giving up playing Missy in Big Mouth, who is also a biracial girl.
Similarly, Simpsons voice actor Hank Azaria revealed earlier this year that he will no longer be playing Apu on the show. “Once I realized that this was the way this character thought, I just didn’t want to participate in it anymore,” he said.
