Apple reveals another cool update that comes with iOS 14

Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro are about to improve. With a series of announcements made in and after WWDC, Apple revealed a series of brilliant updates. You can read everything about them in detail here.

New features include seamless switching between more devices, something called headphone adaptations to adjust the sound to your particular hearing, and share audio with Apple TV. Also, for AirPods Pro only, an advanced transparency mode and spatial audio are coming for that surround sound effect.

But there is one more gift that has been revealed: optimized battery charging.

The thing about rechargeable batteries is that they don’t last forever. And, as any smartphone user knows, the battery life decreases as the months go by.

Although this deterioration cannot be stopped in its tracks, charging the cells properly can help. Sony introduced this to their smartphones years ago, recognizing that while daily battery life is important, it is also important year after year.

So to reduce aging, something we could all do, I would say, the new feature that comes in iOS 14 could make a big difference.

When your iPhone is on iOS 14, you will see a new on-screen push notification that reads: “Optimized Battery Charging Enabled: To reduce battery aging, AirPods learn from their daily charging routine so they can wait to finish charging over 80% you even need to use them. “

This is something that Apple already uses for iPhone and Mac and it is a simple but effective system. Now, as MacRumors saw it thanks to a tweet from @huseyiniyibas, the same fancy solution is also coming to AirPods and AirPods Pro.

Without optimized charging, your smartphone’s charger fires on electricity until the battery reaches 100%. It will then drop again until the charger decides to recharge it again, which can be an almost constant process.

Much better to charge, say, 80% and leave it there overnight and boost things up to 100% just in time for you to wake up.

All very well, but how does he do it?

Well, we may not like to admit it, but we are all routine creatures. The iPhone, for example, can detect that you start using it shortly after your normal wake-up time. Then you can count from that moment for an hour or so, and then start the recharging procedure.

AirPods Pro has already seen a firmware update since the keynote, though it was probably as much for general audio enhancements as it was preparing the headphones for the next updates.

To get this new feature, you need to update your iPhone to iOS 14. That’s restricted to developers right now, but the public beta is coming this month, so it may only be a couple of weeks away.
