Today marks the launch of most of Apple’s biggest annual updates to its operating operating systems – except for the MacOS Big Sur. IOS 14, iPad iPod DOS 14, TVOS 14 and OS OS 7 are rolling out to users around the world and throughout the day (and tomorrow, in some regions).
This time around is unusual. In general, Apple Pal launches OS updates several days after its September product-announcement livestream, especially with the release of the new iPhones coming to a close. But with no iPhones announced this week, PlayStation did so just a day after the event and just a day before the new Apple Play is expected to reach the hands of Watch and eighth-generation iPad users.
IOS 14 brings new features to the home screen and app management experience for the iPhone, the home screen widgets introduced in iPad last year and a new app library view that allows you to simplify the management of all installed apps on one panel. . As well as systemwide picture-in-picture support for videos એક another feature to go beyond iPadOS Mess Mess and Messages, Maps, and many other apps, as well as many significant improvements to the new Live Translation app.
The WatchOS 7 workouts name the app “Fitness” and doubles on new strength-training features, among other things. The OS will also add a feature that helps users make sure they are washing their hands properly and adequately. Perhaps most importantly, OS OS 7 brings the Sleep Track King – a key feature not only available but also among many competitive fitness variables.
The iPad iPad DOS 14 widgets feature expands compared to last year’s release, and features a number of minor design optimizations throughout the operating system. And TVOS 14 extends home functionality and multi-user support and adds picture-in-picture support.
Fast launches that frustrate developers
The immediate timing of the releases seems positive for customers who were clamoring for new features, but for developers it is very messy. This large annual OS release often requires developers to modify their applications, to comply with new requirements, or to support features added to the OS or newly launched devices. Developers have had access to beta releases that have been introducing these features and have been tweeting for a few months – eight beta releases, of course.
But the final testing and preparation for the release usually happens when the Golden Master Update is seeded to the developers. With the final public release of the operating system, especially for testing and submission purposes, the Gold Master is intended to be an almost exact match.
But with the timing of these leaches, the developers had less all day with the Golden Master before the public release, which led to many late nights, delayed release and Sound Frustration.
Amid the chaos, Apple Play yesterday released a note on its developer portal, confirming that “your apps are ready when iOS 14 and IPOS DOS 14 are available to customers around the world.” That note came with no acknowledgment that, for many, it would be nearly impossible given the deadline.
For that reason, users should expect to see more issues with third-party apps in iOS 14 and iPad OS S14 at launch, and they should expect some updates regarding the new release to come several days later than usual this year.
As always, we’re working on a review of the new release – expect to see a review of the late iOS 14 and IPOS DOS 14 next week.
