The prolific technology leak from Twitter WalkingCat has just tweeted what appears to be an image of a new Oculus Quest headset.
In late May, WalkingCat tweeted an image of the HP Reverb G2 the week before the official announcement.
New design, new strap, new camera placement?
This new headset appears to have abandoned the full color of the current Quest for a two-tone appearance, with a white but black exterior interface and controller surfaces. The cloth material on the side of the current Quest appears to be replaced by plastic.
The narrower side depth of the earbuds in the photo indicates that it is slightly smaller than Quest, which hopefully means that it is lighter and therefore more comfortable to wear.
The strap also appears to be a new design. To adjust Oculus Rift, Oculus Go or Oculus Quest for your head, you must use the elastic straps on the sides and on the top. Making three separate adjustments like this can be confusing for some and lead to an incorrect adjustment.
A top strap can still be seen on this new headset, but the side straps appear to have been replaced by a unique rear fit, similar to the Valve Index and PlayStation VR.
The cameras in the upper corners have been moved more to the side. This could result in a wider tracking range for these new touch controllers, which Facebook’s other VR headsets (Rift S) currently achieve via cameras on the side of the main body.
The bottom tracking cameras appear to have not changed position.
Without IPD slider?
There is a lens separation adjustment slider at the bottom of the current Oculus Quest, but that is not visible in the filtered image. The volume buttons are still visible, but there is now an empty space on the other side.
The distance between people’s eyes (called meinterPupillary reistance) varies, and this is important in providing you with a visually comfortable virtual reality experience. If the center of the VR lens is too far from the eye, the user may see a blurred image where static objects do not appear completely solid.
Located at the bottom of the headphones, the current Quest slider allows you to move the lenses to match the separation of your eyes.
Oculus Go on Facebook did not have this feature, nor did the Rift S. currently sold. When Rift S launched, Facebook told us that the lenses are “Best for users between 61.5 and 65.5mm” IPD, which equates to only 46% of men and 43% of women in the largest DPI dataset available publicly.
The filtered image is, of course, just an angle. Facebook may be using a new lens adjustment mechanism with a control on a different side of the earpiece.
What do we know?
A new Oculus Quest would not be a complete surprise: evidence has been accumulating throughout the year.
In March, the official Oculus developer website leaked the code name of a separate headset ‘Del Mar’ with an early access developer program. A reference to the ‘Oculus Jedi Controller For Oculus Del Mar’ was also discovered in the Oculus Mobile SDK.
In April, Gerald McAlister of RGB Schemes found a driver for the ‘Jedi’ driver within the latest firmware for the Consumer Quest. U.S He analyzed the controller and compared it to the current touch controller, finding that it may refer to a new controller with the same input scheme, but that it can potentially improve finger tracking, haptics, and detection.
The controllers in the WalkingCat image clearly still have a control bar and buttons, but the other potential improvements cannot be verified with just an image.
In May, Bloomberg reported that Facebook was working on a new Quest that could be 20% lighter and physically 15% smaller, with a refresh rate of 90Hz. The report also suggested that the new headset would use cheaper materials and slightly improved drivers.
The leaked image appears to agree with Bloomberg’s reports.
Finally, last week, Japanese publication Nikkei reported that a new Oculus headset went into production this month, with production targets of 2 million units.
As with all leaks, take this image with a large grain of salt. Even if it is real, it may not reflect the current state of the product. We will be watching Facebook in the coming weeks and months to provide you with official information. we can find.
