AOC posts poem after told she gets 1 minute to speak at Dem convention

Time – even as short as one minute – is what you make of it, US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Wednesday night.

The New York Democrat responded to Twitter on reports that she will get just 60 seconds to speak when she attends the Democratic Party’s most online national convention next week.

Ocasio-Cortez quoted from ‘God’s Minute’, by the late civil rights leader Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, whose poem was a commentary on the short life.

‘I only have a minute. Sixty seconds in there. Forced to me, I did not choose it, But I know I have to use it, ”reads the poem.

DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION SPREADING REVEALED: WEST TO KNOW

‘Give me an account if I abuse it. Suffer when I lose it. Still a little bit, But eternity is in there. “

Some people who responded to Ocasio-Cortez’s post accused the Democratic Party’s leadership of trying to support the congressional woman – a progressive who supported independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont for president instead of the presumptive standard bearer of the party, former Vice President Joe Biden.

“What a blow to the progressive wing,” one Twitter user wrote. ‘It’s a constant despite us. They think we will cower and peter [out]. They are wrong. We’re not going anywhere. With @AOC as our leader, we’re just getting started. Now that the squad has been re-elected, we are ready to rummage through the halls of Congress. “

“Other speakers have to quit early then they say at the end of [theirs] that the rest of her time goes to @AOC, ”wrote another.

Some remarked that the brief dedication of time for Ocasio-Cortez came despite victories by her and two other “Squad” members – US Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota – in their respective Democratic primaries as they head to the November general election. The fourth member of the Squad, American rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, follows next month’s primary election.

“Democratic establishment has no idea how many hard-line Democratic voters leave them alone because of their ignorant left- or right-wing mantra,” a Twitter user wrote. “The strategy that Trump will win in 2016 is being dumped by the DNC. They dig their own graves. ”

One Twitter user notes that speakers of past conventions ignored the short time they were assigned.

“[Bill] Clinton was given 15 minutes in 1988, “the user wrote. ‘He spoke for 33 and was booed from the stage. Obama spoke for 17 minutes (including stopping for applause 33 times!), It was not even shown on network TV, and he made us believe we could change the world. I can not wait for AOCs 60 seconds. ”

Democrats will meet from next Monday through Aug. 20, mostly online – but with the event anchored in Milwaukee, the city that was selected to host a more conventional convention in July before the coronavirus pandemic called for a separation and a radical change of plans.

Ocasio-Cortez is scheduled to speak Tuesday night, after Sanders spoke Monday night.

Other speakers this week will include former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Later in the week, Biden and running mate Kamala Harris are expected to accept the party’s nomination for president and vice president, respectively, heading into a showdown in November with President Trump and Vice President Pence.
