If you’re used to thinking of Angelina Jolie primarily for who she is today, you may not even recognize the Jolie of years past. While now best known as a humanitarian, activist, role model, and award-winning actress, her early years in the Hollywood eye were a little different.
People immediately recognized Jolie’s talent and beauty as exceptional. But in the early days, there was also talk of how some of their habits and choices for lifestyles turned out differently.
There was one gesture of love and devotion that Jolie used to sport on her that was more wonderful than all the other things that were known about her. So what was this bizarre drink – and what does a razor blade have to do with it?
Angelina Jolie was once married to actor Billy Bob Thornton

Twenty years ago, Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton were married. It was actually the second marriage for Jolie and the fifth for Thornton.
Although Jolie had just been in the psychiatric ward, she and Thornton felt so attached to each other that they decided to get married immediately. All this despite the fact that Thornton was already familiar with Laura Dern at the time.
Things ended apart not too long after that and Jolie went on to become a much bigger movie star than Thornton, to boot. She was then married for a long time to fellow A-lister Brad Pitt.
Thornton and Jolie had an off-beat way of showing their devotion to each other
When Jolie was hot and heavy with Thornton, her intense romance found some very unconventional expressions. Namely, around their first anniversary, they both started carrying a bottle of the other person’s blood around their necks. Yep, you read that right: They carried bottles of each other’s blood like chains.
Maybe horrible for most of us, but for Jolie and Thornton it was the height of romance. In a 2014 interview, Thornton explained what was behind it, saying that for her it was like wearing a closet to keep someone close to your heart.
He said: ‘She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razor blade and cut our fingers, threw a little blood on these cupboards and you wear it around your neck, just like you do your son or daughter’s baby hair in one have. The same. Maybe a little macabre, sure, but for them it seemed like a nice way to feel close when they were apart, like when Jolie was shooting filming Tomb Raider.
These odd love tokens sparked some equally bizarre speculation from fans
In the same interview, Thornton laughed about some rumors that came as a result of the blood clots. “[They were saying] we carried quarter-bottles of blood around our necks, and we were vampires, and we lived in a dungeon, ‘joked Thornton.
There was apparently no truth to those rumors. The two remained happy (and non-vampires!) Together until their split in 2003.
Jolie also laughed at how strange some people found the practice, and explained herself in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2008: ‘It was never a bottle … It was like a flower press. It was like a slight cut on your finger and you pressed your fingerprint. It was kind of a sweet gesture. I thought it was something romantic! ”
Sure, Jolie’s idea about what novels exist may be a little different than the others, but you can not say that the lockets do not make a little more sense when she explains it that way, right?
