While most major releases slated for 2020, including Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Disney’s live-action Mulan, no longer have a confirmed release window, AMC hopes to reopen its theaters in mid-to-late August, as the costs of being closed increase. According to a Business Wire report, the date reflects the expected eventual release dates of some of the delayed films.
While theaters were initially expected to begin reopening in July, reopening dates have been continually delayed in line with delays in the film’s release dates. In the latest move, Warner Bros removed Tenet entirely from the timeline for now, prompting other upcoming films to follow suit.
While theaters in some markets would be relatively safe to reopen, as AMC now plans to institute a mandatory mask-use policy, theater chains don’t want to open too soon before they have new movies to show. About a third of AMC theaters outside of the United States have already reopened.
With theaters closed for four months, the National Association of Theater Owners has begged big studios to stop withholding movies, even if that means that blockbusters don’t get the simultaneous world drops they are used to.
“We need your movies,” association president John Fithian told Fortune. “Distributors who want to play movies theatrically can’t wait until 100% of the markets are allowed to open because that won’t happen until there is a vaccine widely available in the world. Old blockbuster distribution models should be rethought. ” “
