NEW YORK (AP) – AMC Theaters, the nation’s largest movie theater cinema, will reopen in the US on August 20 with retro ticket prices of 15 cents per film.
AMC Entertainment, which owns the chain, said Thursday it expects to open its doors to more than 100 cinemas – or about a sixth of its nationwide locations – on August 20 with throwback awards for a day.
AMC theaters have reopened in several international countries, but remained in the US in March. The chain showed it re-opening as “Movies in 2020 vs. Prices 1920.”
After several false starts due to a summer increase in cases of coronavirus in a large part of the US, extensive film meetings are currently set to begin again in late August. Regal Cinemas, the second largest chain, is set to reopen some US locations on August 21st.
During its open-day promotion, AMC will feature catalog films including “Ghostbusters,” “Black Panther,” “Back to the Future” and “Grease.” Those older movies will continue to play for $ 5.
AMC confirmed that Disney’s much delayed “New Mutants” will debut in theaters August 28. With Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” to follow September 3rd. Warner Bros. plans to release “Tenet” internationally a week earlier, including in Canada. A handful of smaller new releases are also planned for late August, including “Unhinged,” a thriller from Solstice Studios starring Russell Crowe; and Armando Iannucci’s “Personal Story of David Copperfield,” from Disney’s Fox Searchlight.
AMC said Thursday it expects about two-thirds of its theaters will be open to “Tenet” in time. Several states, including California and New York, are allowing movie theaters to reopen.
AMC and other chains have said they will work with reduced capacity to facilitate social distance, along with increased theater cleaning and required mask wear.
