Fernando Alonso became the first driver to crash during training for the Indianapolis 500 in 2020. The Spaniard made a mistake by doping his band from left to bottom down the white line in Turn 4, and made contact with the curb that the racing surface separates from the grass.
The Arrow McLaren SP driver climbed on his own from the No. 66 Chevy after hitting the turn-off wall of Turn 4 with the right side of the car. Spinning at the top of the pit track, Alonso was quickly approached by the AMR Safety Team.
It marks the second crash for Alonso in subsequent years at Indianapolis. Riding for McLaren Racing in 2019, the two-time Formula 1 world champion crashed in practice at Turn 3, which sent the rest of his month down May.
“You lose the car, you lose the grip of the car, and this place, the walls come very close,” he said after being released from the infield care center. “Unfortunately, it happened again. We will learn from this. Nothing we can do now. Tomorrow we start again. ”
