Liverpool suffered a strange sensation when they lost just a fourth Premier League game in more than two years at Arsenal on Wednesday.
Sadio Mane opened the scoring, but two defensive errors allowed the Gunners to send reigning European, World and English champions to a 2-1 loss.
The result means that Jurgen Klopp’s team is now only 18 points clear at the top of the Premier League and cannot reach the 100 point mark, so they would not have received silverware.
But there were many who went unnoticed or went unnoticed during the 90 minutes at the Emirates.
Alisson screams the odds
Both Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were booed to allow Arsenal their two goals.
But at least the duo were strong enough to take on television cameras shortly after the game to address their mistakes.
And even moments after his mistake, Alisson yelled at his teammates: “We start again, boys. We don’t want any more mistakes.”
There is a reason why these players are among the best in the world. They don’t stop at their mistakes, they learn from them.
Martin’s Minamino mix
Not so much a moment was missed as a substitution was overlooked.
Martin Tyler has become something of a Marmite figure with Liverpool fans since his eerily ecstatic response to Anthony Martial scoring for Manchester United against the Reds in 2015.
This time, Irking, Anfield’s faithful, was his regular reference to Mohamed Salah when Takumi Minamino was in possession for the last 10 minutes.
It would have been more forgivable if Salah had not been substituted for that point.
Fans return with a bang
What started outside of Etihad is quickly becoming a regular feature for Liverpool in the closing weeks of the season.
Again, shortly after the kickoff, the silence inside the stadium was interrupted by the crackling and bursting of nearby fireworks, presumably by Reds fans celebrating their Premier League triumph.
While there were no itinerant supporters in the Emirates, Arsenal recognized where they would have been by placing a banner bearing the Liverpool insignia on the other end.
A nice touch.
Arteta everything smiles
Having Jurgen Klopp around is enough to cheer up most people, although Everton fans may disagree.
But one of the former Blues players, Mikel Arteta, was positively delighted when he had a pre-game conversation with the Reds boss, later beaming as he wandered down the sideline after their conversation.
However, it was not such a happy time for a long-lasting encounter at Arsenal.
His famous pet Gunnersaurus continues to watch from home along with all the other fans. He is sorely missed.
