An unidentified victim died early Wednesday morning, officials at Mau Memorial Medical Center told CNN.
A 56-year-old man from Lehina, west Maui, was exiting the old ramp in the bay, according to the incident, released by the Department of Land and Natural Resources of the Hawaii Department. He was taken to hospital after the attack and was admitted for surgery, the DLNRA said.
The state department posted more than one photo on social media showing surfboards with large bite marks. One photo showed a bite mark measuring 17 inches wide.
A statement released by WSL said the attack promoted the indefinite grip of the Maui Pro, the women’s professional surfing competition of the World Surf League, on the day of the incident.
WSL on Wednesday announced its decision to cancel the remaining heat of the competition at Honolua Bay, with a statement stating that the organization is working on options to complete the event at an alternative location in Hawaii after working with local officials and talking to surfers.
The surfer who died in the attack was a recreational surfer and was not involved in the WSL competition, the DLNRA said.
The surfing organization shared condolences to the family, friends and Maui surfing community of the shark attack victims in a social media post on Thursday.
The WSL wrote in a caption on social media, “The WSL has learned that the victim of a shark attack on Honolua Bay died tragically on Tuesday.” “Our thoughts and hearts are with the victim’s family and friends as well as the entire Maui surfing community.”
