JOHANNESBURG – Former Free State settlement MEC Mosebenzi Zwane said on Friday that he still did not know how many houses were built during his tenure, but that he personally handed over 50 houses.
Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo called his estimate “terribly wrong” because his department said in a statement that the figure was 400 and 600 houses.
Zwane distanced himself from that statement while testifying before the state capture commission. He has been involved in creating a plan to take R1 billion earmarked for low-cost housing.
In the past, the commission also heard that he was a MEC when both the controversial asbestos project and the Vrede dairy farm were created.
“It appears that the department is giving much higher figures in terms of how many houses you delivered. It can certainly be more than 400, ”Zondo said.
Zwane responded by saying, “The thing to note is that he wasn’t very sure about the number of houses.”
“Your estimate would be quite horrible,” Zondo said in response.
“It is not to say that these were the total number of houses that were completed during that process,” Zwane said.
The former MEC said he did not know the figures were inflated.
“That never caught my attention. My main concern was not money, it was people who were promised houses, “he said.
