CAPE TOWN – Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu calls on non-profit organizations (NGOs) to work with the government to distribute food donations.
Zulu on Monday described her department’s upcoming campaigns to provide help to destitute families. The minister confirmed that charities could distribute donations during the shutdown, but would prefer that they do so with their department.

She said that while there were many hands to help those in need, a coordinated approach was needed.
Zulu said organizations like churches and NGOs should work through his department to facilitate the distribution of food packages.
“As you distribute the food, be sensible and don’t end up with the food going to the same places. Be sensible there are remote areas, work with us,” said Zulu.
The minister also requested that food distribution be done in a more dignified manner.
“But also make it your responsibility that when food is distributed, preferably if food can be thrown away at home [and] give more dignity to our people, “he said.
She said that until now, the distribution of food packages has been smooth in the nine provinces.
