Zondo: Zuma drops state capture investigation ‘serious business’

JOHANNESBURG – An arrest warrant could be issued for former President Jacob Zuma.

His exit from the state arrest investigation defies the commission’s subpoena to testify.

Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo previously dismissed Zuma’s request for his disqualification from the commission.

According to Zondo, Zuma did not meet the test for a reasonable understanding of bias.

“The request for my disqualification falls … and is consequently dismissed,” Zondo ruled.

Zuma filed an additional affidavit this week saying Zondo was downplaying their relationship, insisting they are friends.

Zondo denied this claim, saying: “Applicant cannot be allowed to raise this issue [personal relationship] so late in the day. “

Zuma’s lawyer, Muzi Sikhakhane, told Zondo that “you have become a judge in a dispute that involves yourself.”

Sikhakhane requested the suspension of the proceedings in order to review the sentence.

But after a brief hiatus, Zuma did not return to the court. It was expected that he would face a request to appear on the witness stand.

Zondo was appalled at Zuma’s apparent departure.

“It’s a shame that he chose to leave without asking permission,” Zondo said. “This is a serious matter”.

The commission will not sit on Friday.
