PRETORIA – Two people appeared in Polokwane Magistrates Court this week in connection with the murder of the owner of the Ocean Basket seafood restaurant, Lizette Deacon, and her mother Hettie, the NPA said Tuesday.

Sophy Mmako, who worked as a maid for the slain deacons, appeared in court Monday with her co-defendant, her 41-year-old boyfriend Lazarus Mahlo.

“Lazarus Mahlo and Sophy Mmako appeared in the Polokwane Magistrates Court [on Monday] on two counts of murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping, respectively, ”said NPA Limpopo spokesman Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi.

“A team of investigators made a breakthrough by arresting two more suspects, Lazarus Mahlo, 41, and a domestic worker, Sophy Mmako, 51, who worked for the late Polokwane businesswoman Lizette and her mother Hettie Deacon. ”.

Both defendants were arrested on Friday, September 18, in different places.

Mmako was arrested in Polokwane, while Mahlo was captured in Tembisa, Gauteng province.

Malabi-Dzhangi said the South African Police Service is looking for a Zimbabwean named Owen who uses different surnames.

“The police are also asking Owen to serve himself at the nearest police station, as it is believed that he could assist in ongoing investigations. Owen, who is Zimbabwean, uses any of the following as last names: Setsiba, Makutara, or Mbedzi.

“Anyone with information on Owen’s whereabouts is asked to contact the nearest police station or the crime stop number 0860010111,” Malabi-Dzhangi said.

“The matter was postponed to September 25. Both defendants will join the other two co-defendants Abibi Hamid and Casper Mudau.”

The bodies of Lizette, 55, and her mother, 70, were found with stab wounds in an abandoned vehicle on the R37 next to the Kushcke off-ramp earlier this month.

The two women are alleged to have been attacked at their home in Welgelegen near the Cycad Estate in Polokwane, and then put into a van.

The first two suspects, Hamid and Mudau, were arrested last week. They appeared in Polokwane Magistrates Court on Tuesday last week on charges related to two counts of murder and home burglary.

“Hamid, a citizen of Zimbabwe, was also charged under the Immigration Act” because he is in the country illegally, “police said at the time.
