Former public protector Thuli Madonsela has asked NGOs to help with food and water on South Africa’s border with Zimbabwe.

A Zimbabwean citizen died after collapsing at the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo on Tuesday.

According to eNCA, the bus he was traveling on had been in transit since Monday.

Those on the bus with her said she complained of fatigue and dizziness and asked passengers to pray for her. He died while receiving medical attention.

The bus driver told eNCA: “She approached the bus and said she felt dizzy because it was a bit hot inside the bus. He said he wanted to get off the bus where there is fresh air. When he was about to resign, he collapsed.

“Another lady and I helped her and gave her water. We also added water to it to make it feel fresh. As time went by, it was as if he felt better. Then he got out of the bus. When he returned, he couldn’t get on the bus. She sat outside to get some fresh air. Then other women got off the bus and began to pray for her and pour water on her. But as time passed, she lost consciousness. “

Photos and videos of the traffic congestion stretching for 15 km at the border post have been circulating on social media, with people wondering if Covid-19 regulations are being followed and asking governments to South Africa and Zimbabwe to address the matter.

Former public protector Thuli Madonsela said: “We just heard that this issue of the border with Zimbabwe has turned into a humanitarian emergency. @ThumaFoundation’s source says three people have died. No water, no food for the people and small children who have been in line since Sunday and before.
