KwaZulu-Natal Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala has pointed to a “new trend” of criminals who take advantage of funeral arrangements under national confinement regulations as a cover to carry out their criminal activities.
Zikalala was speaking at a briefing on efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus on Sunday, where she detailed two incidents over the weekend.
On Saturday night, in Underberg, police saw a car belonging to a funeral home. The car was stopped and searched, and police officers discovered liquor in the vehicle. The occupants were arrested.
Earlier the same day, two suspected drug dealers, posing as funeral home employees, were arrested after they allegedly caught in possession of 80 kg of dagga hidden in a coffin they were carrying. They were detained by police officers handling an obstacle in Pongola, and later arrested.
The arrests were part of the 1,182 arrests made since the extension of the blockade.
“We welcome the significant progress made by our police authorities in capturing those who have tried to violate the blockade regulations,” says Zikalala.
“We want to congratulate law enforcement operations for increasing efforts to ensure compliance with the blocking regulations.”
