DURBAN – Former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede’s attorney, attorney Jay Naidoo, said his client’s trial was delayed and they wanted it to begin.

Gumede and 16 others face corruption charges linked to bid fraud amounting to more than 400 million rand. She appeared at the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday.

The matter was postponed until December 10 for the State to complete its more than 350,000 page forensic audit report on the matter.

Gumede is currently on bail of R50,000 after she was arrested in May 2019.

The former mayor lashed out at the National Tax Authority (NPA) while addressing her supporters outside of court, saying the state was ruling its case against her.

“The State has been given another opportunity to complete the investigation and we hope that by December 10, the investigation will end and we can begin the trial,” Naidoo said.

However, the NPA said that it was now ready to proceed with the criminal case against Gumede and others because it had sufficient evidence.

The court heard that some of the evidence held by the state included more than 5,000 pages of seized documents, 460,000 pages of bank statements and records after interviewing 450 people in the case.
