“The decision was that they should be reassigned. We were unable to implement that decision because the provincial list was closed. We consult with national leaders in implementing this decision so that they understand that we are acting in the best interest of the people, ”said Provincial Secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli.
Gumede will continue to collect a salary in the legislature.
Zikalala said the integrity commission will speed up its investigations and anticipated a finding will be reached in a month.
Decisions on Gumede and Mabuyakhulu were made in a provincial executive committee (PEC) on Friday morning. Mabuyakhulu was asked to step aside because he is one of 16 suspects in a case involving the theft of some 28 million rand from provincial coffers.
During his tenure as MEC for economic development in KwaZulu-Natal, Mabuyakhulu allegedly allocated millions to the accounts of his seven co-defendants and nine other companies and businessmen for whom he allegedly received bribes. Mabuyakhulu and Durban businessman Mabheleni Ntuli were cited among the top five players in a fraud, corruption and money laundering case related to a failed jazz festival five years ago that cost taxpayers 28 million rand.
Zikalala and Ntuli are expected to explain the PEC’s decisions at the special meeting of the ANC’s national executive committee that begins on Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday.
