Thohoyandou High Court sentenced a Limpopo woman and her boyfriend to life imprisonment for the murder of her husband.

Maria Mkhoto, 45, and Russell Baloyi, 32, were found guilty of the murder of Jonathan Mkhoto in February 2015.

The court heard that the two defendants were involved in a relationship when Maria Mkhoto conspired to kill her husband, a member of the South African Defense Forces (SANDF) at the Braamboss Base in the Vhembe District.

“Her boyfriend was an inmate in Thohoyandou; they met through social media platforms. The accused inmate later hired two men to track down the deceased. He began to be in contact with the deceased, claiming to be a prophet as his girlfriend He said the “The deceased had a certain disease and desperately needed a cure,” said police spokesman Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

Baloyi arranged a meeting with the deceased at Malamulele. That was the last time they saw him alive.

The husband’s body was found on Moswane Mountain on February 23, 2015.

He had multiple stab wounds.

Baloyi and Mkhoto were sentenced to life in prison for the murder and 25 years for conspiracy to commit murder, robbery and kidnapping.
