Cape Town – Shocked neighbors, friends and family gathered outside the house where Lumka Hlotywa, 49, was among seven people killed in a shooting in Gugulethu yesterday.
Two others were injured after armed men entered the house and opened fire.
Hlotywa and her friends had gathered at the home and were having fun socializing, neighbors told the Cape Times at the scene last night.
A surprised witness, who asked not to be identified, said that two men were seen carrying weapons and firing into the air before entering the home.
“Inside a car there were two men. I was outside in the courtyard, and had just returned from the tent when I saw two knights with heavy weapons firing into the air.
“I went into the house to hide and after a second I heard more than 10 shots. When I went out to see what happened, the car had already left, ”said the witness.
“The people who were shot are my neighbors and their friends. This morning (yesterday) I was with them having a few drinks but I left because I didn’t feel like drinking.
Hlotywa’s uncle, Mbulelo Hlotywa, said: “I didn’t expect her to leave us like this. I am not feeling well at all, I am disturbed and I will never recover from this until I go to the grave. “
He said a niece alerted him to the shooting and he immediately rushed to the scene.
“I heard that he was with his friends and I don’t even know them. All I could grasp is that they were drinking and having a good time, ”Hlotywa said.
Western Cape Organized Crime detectives with other crime scene experts combed the scene for clues.
“Preliminary reports indicate that three women and four men between the ages of 30 and 40 were shot and killed by unknown gunmen at NY 78 in Gugulethu.
“Two other victims were injured and taken to a medical center,” said police spokesman Brigadier Novela Potelwa.
“The details of the scene are still incomplete. An update will be provided in due course. “
