“We are concerned for his safety and are working to get him into a witness protection program,” Myburgh said.

The police had at least two witnesses who placed the two defendants at the scene.

One said she saw the two defendants, along with an unidentified third man, walking from the same direction where Horner’s bakkie was found abandoned. One of them had blood stained clothes.

Another witness claimed to have overheard the two men casually talking about the murder at a local tavern, even displaying a wallet and cell phone that Horner had reportedly taken from him.

Myburgh said Horner’s wallet had yet to be found.

He said that when the couple were arrested on October 3, a day after Horner’s murder, they were found to have minor abrasions on their elbows.

Myburgh told the court that the blood test confirm if blood samples taken from the scene linked them to the crime.

Horner’s body had been tied to a fence and he had a rope around his neck. He had been repeatedly stabbed in the head, shoulder, arm, and hands. He also had cuts on his right thigh, leading police to believe that he had been dragged down a gravel road.

The autopsy revealed that he died of strangulation.
