JOHANNESBURG – As the country assimilates news of a new variant of COVID-19, Gauteng authorities are warning of super spreader events.

The provincial government has warned against mass gatherings in this festive period and urges event organizers to be cautious.

On Friday, South Africans were informed of the new COVID-19 variant that turned out to be dominant in the cases seen in Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape, the Garden Route district in the Western Cape, various areas of KwaZulu-Natal and He has quickly found his way to Gauteng.

The Gauteng government has warned against organizing or attending festivals, sporting events and other mass gatherings.

So far, the province has recorded more than 252,000 coronavirus cases and more than 5,000 deaths.

According to the National Department of Health, Gauteng is one of the provinces hardest hit by the second wave of COVID-19, and this is likely to get worse during the festive period.

The president of the South African Medical Association, Dr. Angelique Coetzee, said that the recently discovered 501.v2 variant is responsible for the current wave and appears to be spreading rapidly with higher viral loads.

“The first strain still exists, but this strain took over, so it means we see more sick people and more people admitted because it spreads so much faster.

Coetzee said the variant that stunned scientists revealed more mutations in its genetic material than compared to a black sheep in the coronavirus family of pathogens.

With South Africa approaching one million coronavirus infections, Coetzee said Gauteng residents should take additional precautionary measures.
