CAPE TOWN – Prime Minister Alan Winde said Tuesday during Wednesday’s consultation that he will argue vigorously against any forceful instrument, such as a blockade, that is imposed on the province.

He said provincial and local governments were considering their own interventions and localized restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19 in accordance with their respective powers.

“The Western Cape is against the imposition of the blockade in the provinces and is in favor of local and specific interventions based on scientific evidence.”

Winde said that one of the interventions, which was necessary, was around the meetings, and especially those that take place indoors.

The number of people allowed to gather indoors is currently 250; Winde said this was too high and should be reconsidered for specific critical points.

He said another challenge was limited law enforcement resources, as the province redirects law enforcement teams to enforce regulations while crime continues.

“We would also like to see more manpower sent to local hotspots, in this case we need to use law enforcement and this is where the national government can help with the deployment of additional police resources.”
