CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde on Thursday reiterated calls for the public to join in using all available measures to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Winde’s plea follows the announcement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize that South Africa is now caught in a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
New cases of COVID-19 in the province have increased 53.4% in the last seven days, compared to the previous week.
Cape Town’s northern and eastern sub-district neighborhoods have seen a 99% increase in new reported COVID-19 cases.
Winde said behavior change was critical to stopping the spread of the coronavirus.
“We need to make sure that we are all playing our part to make sure that during this December season, we rise to that challenge and make sure, wherever possible, to flatten this curve.”

The provincial health chief, Dr. Keith Cloete, said there was a sharp increase in new cases on the subway.
“The patterns differ across sub-districts, but we are seeing an overall increase across all sub-districts.”
The number of COVID-19 tests performed has risen from just over 8,600 at the beginning of last month to over 16,100 at the end of last week.
