CAPE TOWN – Prime Minister Alan Winde and his cabinet are discussing possible district closures on Friday amid a resurgence of COVID-19.

In the Western Cape, infections have increased by more than 50% weekly.

Cape Town and Garden Route are the main areas of concern.

Winde maintained that the province could not afford another strict blockade, but said it could be open to investigating mini-blockades.

He arranged a meeting with the MECs on Friday to discuss the possibility of stricter regulations in troubled districts.

However, it may not be their decision, as Lungi Mtshali from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs explained: “In the Disaster Management Act, there is no provision for the provinces to institute their own provincial blockade.”

Mtshali said that when it comes to restrictions, the province can take advantage of other pieces of the legislation.
