Why the groundwork is being laid for Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool successor without anyone noticing

Pepijn Lijnders is a serious man. That shouldn’t really be in doubt. Liverpool’s assistant coach is arguably at one of the simplest and most difficult jobs in world football.

How do you design the kind of intensity that this Liverpool generates so consistently? Even more complex is how he manages to keep those fires burning at Melwood so routinely, despite a 195-point Premier League culmination over two seasons.

However, as Lijnders sat in the chair at Liverpool’s pre-game press conference against Lincoln City and today against Arsenal, it suddenly made sense. The Dutchman is attractive, exuberant and personally warm to journalists who have had the pleasure of evaluating his thoughts on a more personal level.

And yet you feel that the privilege is all yours. Lijnders is a man who can talk about football all day. Their eyes light up as they pronounce names like Takumi Minamino and Diogo Jota, how they can help Liverpool open up opponents.

He is a man who never stops dreaming of the perfect goal and how to score it. Football is the Lijnders labyrinth, you get lost in its infinite possibilities and adventures. Many of the traits described so far can also be attributed to someone like Pep Guardiola, but you feel that Guardiola doesn’t enjoy what he does enough. The intensity devours him, spits him out in a way that leaves him screaming at the winter sky with two raised fingers.

Lijnders taking on press duties for Lincoln and Arsenal might seem trivial, at best, a story to some. But every time you hear him speak, you can’t help but wonder if he’s part of the long-term game, a molding process until 2024. Pep has had his face to face with Jürgen and we have decided that something that can really help his growth could be taking on press duties on certain occasions as it takes him to where we all want him to be: the Liverpool manager.

I previously disagreed with that sentiment, but then you look at someone like Mikel Arteta, who stepped forward when he felt he was fine and has been very impressive.

As it stands, Lijnders has his hands full as Liverpool’s second in command. You are learning on the job in one of the best football stories of the modern era. Furthermore, he is a great protagonist in the arc of Liverpool’s resurgence. A character that exudes energy and intrigue in equal measure.

Liverpool will rekindle their love / hate relationship with the League Cup against Arsenal, but the most intriguing clue about the club’s future may have already been given.
