South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan says Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe may have to resign as club owner if elected president of the African Football Confederation (Caf) in next year’s elections.
Jordaan said that Caf’s constitution does not provide for a club owner to conflict as the organization’s president, but Safa is clear about the conflict of interest that arises when a club owner is also the president of an association.
Motsepe was endorsed as Caf de Safa’s presidential candidate and his nomination has been submitted to the continental maternal body before the November 12 deadline.
“In Safa’s constitution, section 36.7, no club owner can be president of Safa for obvious reasons of conflict of interest. Caf does not have that provision, but from a governance and non-constitutional point of view. You have to resign from a governance point of view because you can’t just sit there and talk about all the African federations and club competitions when you have an interest. I think he gets it, ”Jordaan said.

Motsepe will run against current President Ahmad Ahmad, who is from Madagascar. Jordaan is vice president of Caf, while Amaju Pinnick of Nigeria, along with Botswana and Sierra Leone have also endorsed Motsepe as president.
Jordaan, who said he will travel to Morocco on November 17, said he let Ahmad know that Motsepe was Safa’s preferred candidate.
“Ahmad Ahmad is a candidate and what will happen in the future is unknown. We have clearly explained why we believe Patrice should be a candidate in this election. I tried to call Ahmad last night (Sunday) because I thought it was fair and I am his vice president. It’s only fair that I have to inform you before attending a press conference, ”Jordaan said.
“I had to text him because there are no WhatsApp calls in Cairo. The text said that we have nominated Patrice as president and that was Safa’s decision. He said annotated, so he is aware that we are presenting a candidate. “
Jordaan also said that they are not following the pronouncements of the president of the Confederation of the Football Association of Southern Africa, Philip Chiyangwa, that Safa and the regional body will support Ahmad’s presidency.
“Our position as Safa is one that we have discussed for a long period of time. Safa did not support anyone other than Patrice Motsepe and the decision published in the newspaper is not a decision by Cosafa.
“We are members of Cosafa. Where did that meeting take place? I spoke with the president of Cosafa and told him that he could not make announcements when their members were not called for a meeting,” Jordaan said.
There is the issue of cold relations between South Africa and Morocco, but Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa said relations between the countries are cordial.
“We have good working relationships with almost every country on the continent.
“Our differences with Morocco have never been personal. We continue to compromise them, including on this matter. The President of Safa [Jordaan] has hired his counterpart there. No one will commit, including those with candidates, ”Mthethwa said.
