Los Blancos introduced a new and unknown name Sunday as they sought a goal in their first La Liga game.
Marvin Park made his Real Madrid debut on Sunday when Zinedine Zidane’s team drew 0-0 against Real Sociedad.
The relatively unknown 20-year-old forward, who calls himself Marvin, was introduced in the 70th minute by Rodrygo as Los Blancos searched in vain for a winner.
While Marvin failed to score a fairytale goal on his debut, his first La Liga appearance comes after an impressive preseason that saw the Spanish U-19 international draw Zidane’s attention.
Generally deployed as a right winger but also capable of playing as an attacking midfielder, Marvin won the UEFA Youth League with Real Madrid last season, scoring four goals and contributing four assists in 33 appearances in all competitions.
However, Marvin’s path to the Santiago Bernabéu has not been easy and his promotion to the first team has taken many by surprise.
Born in the Balearic Islands, a Spanish archipelago much closer to Barcelona than Madrid, the promising youngster began his youth career with the Ciutat de Palma in 2006 before securing an interesting move to English club Tranmere Rovers in 2009.
After three years in England, Marvin would return to Ciutat de Palma before passing through La Salle and Penya Arrabal.
Then in 2016, after drawing attention across Spain, Real Madrid called with an initial three-year contract that he accepted despite Mallorca’s best efforts to keep him closer to his hometown.
After disappearing into the Los Blancos youth ranks and winning an extended contract through July 2021, Marvin is now emerging as a genuine prospect for the club after his senior debut on Sunday.
Zidane’s team had a quiet summer in the transfer market and the club looks set to give its young talent a chance to impress in the coming months with Sergio Arribas also bowing for the first team against Sociedad.
Marvin has done his part to impress in recent years with three countries vying for his international loyalty at one stage.
Born to a Nigerian father and a South Korean mother but raised in Spain, all three had shown interest in Marvin, who apparently opted for his homeland in January 2019 after making his debut for Spain’s U19 team.
While his international future appears to be a distraction, Marvin will undoubtedly focus on establishing himself at the club level after Zidane’s show of faith.
“Unforgettable day! Very happy for the debut with @realmadrid in the league. It’s time to keep working and learning,” Marvin posted on Instagram after the match against the Society.
Real Madrid will face Real Betis on Saturday with Marvin now on the prowl as a genuine option for Zidane’s team to advance.
