Durban – A Westville homeowner was stabbed and killed during a home invasion Tuesday.
Paramedics and police were called to the home on Roger Sishi Road shortly after 5 am.
Garrith Jamieson, an advanced life support paramedic, said a father and son were attacked during the burglary and were treated by paramedics at the scene.
Just after 5:20 am, paramedics were called for an alleged break-in that had occurred on Roger Sishi Road in the Westville North area near the M19. Upon arrival, paramedics found that three occupants of the house had suffered various injuries. A man believed to be 50 years old had suffered a critical stab wound and was stabilized at the scene by advanced life support paramedics before he went into cardiac arrest. Despite attempts by paramedics and doctors at the hospital, the patient succumbed to his injuries, ”he said.
The other two residents of the home sustained moderate injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment, Jamieson said.
Police detectives were at the house and were reconstructing the sequence of events.
No arrests have been made.
KZN police spokesman Capt. Nqobile Gwala said the attack occurred after the owner opened the front door to let the dogs out.
“She was confronted by two men wearing ski masks,” Gwala said.
“They were forced into the house and there was a confrontation between the suspects and the family. A 53-year-old father was stabbed in the chest and his 18-year-old son was also stabbed in the right thigh. The suspects took a cell phone, wallet and fled the scene. The father later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery were opened at the Westville Police Station for investigation. “
The incident comes just weeks after a Westville homeowner shot and killed two home burglars and wounded a third during a shooting.
The incident occurred three weeks ago on Grace Avenue when four burglars broke into the man’s home.
The quick-thinking owner of the house was able to avoid the attack with his weapon. A fourth suspect managed to escape.
