Residents of the Western Cape received a loud awakening just after midnight Tuesday when a magnitude 3.4 to 3.5 earthquake struck at a depth of 5 km about 47 km from Saldanha on the west coast at 00:26 .

The tremors were felt in Cape Town shortly after.

This was according to the Council on Geosciences and Earthquake Track.

On September 26, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck approximately 1,600 km southeast of South Africa, causing tremors in the Mother City hours later.

The next morning at 09:12, an earthquake measuring 2.3 magnitude on the local magnitude scale was recorded and its epicenter was located between 5 and 6 km north of Durbanville.

Jasper Knight, professor of physical geography and geoscientist at Wits University’s School of Geography, Archeology, and Environmental Studies, told News24 at the time that these seismic events were not uncommon.

It should be something that people expect.

According to eNCA, no victims or material damage have been reported.

The minor seismic event caused a stir when scared locals took to social media to comment on the shaking.
