Western Cape SAPS has thanked most of the people for heeding the call to observe Level 3 regulations and uphold the rule of law.
JOHANNESBURG – Since New Year’s Eve Thursday, the Western Cape Police have issued 2,915 fines for violating Disaster Management Act regulations.
Police said the majority of the transgressions (2,185) were due to breach of the curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Twenty-nine illegal shebeens were closed with 32 arrests for the sale, dispensing and distribution of liquor. During the weekend operation, a total of 11,000 liters of alcohol were seized. Thirteen firearms and 100 cartridges were also confiscated.
A vehicle checkpoint carried out early Sunday morning in Laingsburg in the Karoo led to the discovery of 70 kg of bagged dagga found in a taxi bound for Cape Town. A 27-year-old passenger from Belhar was arrested.
On the beaches of the province, the police were also deployed to ensure compliance with level 3 restrictions. Although most of the beaches were deserted, there were some offenders.
During compliance inspections at the Overberg beaches on Friday, police removed and fined 15 people from three beaches in Pringle Bay, Onrus and Castle Beach. Fines amounting to R15,000 were issued.
