  • Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde does not approve of a Facebook post in which Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo brags about his upcoming vacation.
  • Health workers in the province are currently under pressure due to the rapid increase in Covid-19 infections.
  • Winde says she has spoken to Mbombo about the post and will speak to her again.

Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde described a social media post in which Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo brags about going on vacation as “simply unacceptable.”

Mbombo posted the message on Facebook two days before Christmas along with a video of her singing and dancing.

In the message, he said he was heading to Limpopo for the holidays, a time when overburdened healthcare workers in his province are complaining that Covid-19 infections are out of control.

Winde told Jeremy van Wyk on Cape Talk on Monday that his entire team was on standby for the holiday season and there were alternates for those who left, “whether it’s a minister or a department head.”

He said that Mbombo had been attending meetings every day, but remotely, through Microsoft Teams.

However, he added that he did not approve of their posting on Facebook.

He said:

I must also say that frankly, that social media post was just unacceptable. That was not the correct message we want to send.

When asked if he would take disciplinary action against her, he said: “I have spoken with her and will continue to speak with her.”

The post is still on Facebook and has not been removed.

The ANC described Mbombo’s post as one that was “in very bad taste” and said it was not fit for purpose.

Mbombo, at the time, said he was not aware of any negative reactions to his post.
