The alcohol industry has lamented continued restrictions on the sale of alcohol, but experts say it is too early to lift the ban and South Africa will have to change its approach to the problem of alcohol use in the country.
For months, since the Covid-19 shutdown began in March, a debate has raged about the need for a ban on the sale of alcohol. The government instituted the ban to curb the number of cases of alcohol-related hospital trauma, such as car accidents and violence, because the increase in trauma cases meant that hospitals would run out of beds for Covid-19 patients. .
Last month, the country went to level 1 lockdown and people slowly return to offices as meetings resume. Level 1 also came with a relaxation of the ban on the sale of alcohol for domestic consumption, from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. But the weekends are still forbidden.
