Weather service warns of more downpours in South Africa as floods wreak havoc

JOHANNESBURG – The South African Weather Service warned of more possible storms and floods in various parts of the country for the remainder of this weekend.

The provinces, including Gauteng and the Free State, are already battling extensive damage to roads and infrastructure from sustained downpours.

Forecaster Luthando Masimini said: “We are experiencing cloudy conditions in the central and eastern parts with isolated or widespread rains and thunderstorms. A warning has been sent for the central parts of the country in areas including the eastern parts of the North Cape, the parts western provinces of the Northwest and the Free State, as well as the northeastern parts of the Eastern Cape. ”

In KwaZulu-Natal, a 22-year-old woman died after being swept away while trying to cross a river with strong currents in Umlazi.

Meanwhile, clean-up operations were underway in Tshwane following localized flooding and overnight rain damage.

Tshwane emergency services urged residents to remain vigilant amid heavy rains.

“Flood incidents were reported to the Tshwane emergency services call center related to the heavy rains experienced in various parts of the city on November 20, 2020. No loss of life or injury was reported as a result of the heavy downpours.

“Major traffic blockages, flooded roads and bridges, vehicles stuck in the water, trees uprooted and houses flooded were reported in various parts of the city,” emergency services said in a statement Saturday.
