We won’t run out of content while you’re stuck at home – Netflix

Netflix has assured viewers and investors that it won’t run out of new content while subscribers are trapped at home due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking during the company 2020 first quarter earnings callNetflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos explained that the company is confident it has enough post-production content to last until 2020 and through 2021.

“We work very far in relation to the industry because we launch our shows with all our episodes at the same time and we are working far around the world,” said Sarandos.

“Our 2020 list of series and movies is largely filmed and remotely post-production at locations around the world, and we’re actually pretty much embedded in our 2021 list.”

This means that while other content providers may have a hard time generating content this year due to production constraints caused by the coronavirus, Netflix should continue to release content at its normal rate as it continues its post-production process as normal.

Netflix Group chief financial officer Spencer Neumann added that the streaming service is on track to release more originals this year than the year before.

“We will really have more Netflix branded originals in our service this year than last year,” Neumann said.

Massive boost in Netflix traffic

The international pandemic COVID-19 has resulted in a massive increase in Netflix traffic due to increased self-isolation and blocking measures imposed in various countries.

South African ISPs have also seen a huge increase in streaming traffic due to a lack of live entertainment such as sports.

“Due to the various social distancing measures implemented around the world, satellite television has no live sports to watch and this has generated a huge demand for streaming services like Netflix and Showmax,” said Webafrica. I previously told MyBroadband.

South African data center operator and telecoms company Dimension Data also said it has seen a huge increase in peer trafficking after the implementation of the national coronavirus blockade.

“We have seen an overall 25% increase in the amount of exchange traffic exchanged to and from our content delivery nodes, a clear increase in the consumption of content-based applications,” said Dimension Data.

“Networked content delivery to subscribers and peers through our open peer policy has increased by 40% for Netflix and Facebook.”
