Two prominent game retailers in South Africa told MyBroadband that pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 were sold out within minutes of its launch last week.
Sony’s next-generation consoles are available in two models, priced as follows:
- PS5 Digital Edition – 9999 R
- Standard PS5 – R11,999
BT Games, Koodoo and Raru were the first retailers to open pre-orders on Thursday morning. On the afternoon of the same day, none of these retailers had any remaining stock.
E-commerce giant Takealot was the next to launch with pre-orders on Friday morning at 09:00.
About 20 minutes later, the Digital Edition was no longer available, and shortly after, the Standard console was also sold out.
Massmart’s Makro and Game stores opened their pre-orders Friday afternoon. As of Monday morning, none of these stores had any remaining stock.
MyBroadband asked retailers how many PS5 units they were allocated, how quickly they sold out, and if they would receive additional stock in the near future.

Raru told MyBroadband that she had a warning of about 20 minutes before starting on pre-orders for the PlayStation. Once the orders were opened, the console sold out in a matter of minutes.
“Our standard PS5 console pre-order went live at 9:30 AM. M. And it was sold out four minutes later, ”said Raru.
“If you look at what has happened globally with PS5 pre-orders, any retailer that succeeds in securing PS5 pre-order stock can expect them to sell out extremely quickly.
The company told MyBroadband that this initial allocation was only for the standard version of the console, while accessories were limited to DualSense controllers, remote control, and Pulse 3D headphones.
He expects demand to remain very high for the foreseeable future and anticipates that a second round of PlayStation 5 allotments will be available.
“There is no date yet when these new assignments will be available. We hope it will be before the end of the year, but nothing has been confirmed yet, ”said Raru.
Also expect strong demand for the new Xbox consoles.
“Of the wish lists for Xbox consoles, the current ratio is 3 to 1 for the Xbox Series X console versus Series S,” said Raru.

Because of this, his pre-orders were sold out in 10 minutes.
Although he was unable to share the number of PS5 consoles assigned to him, he indicated that the Digital Edition made up only about 8% of the total consoles sold.
It said it will get a second drop from the standard and digital editions three to four weeks after launch.
“We have both SKUs coming in, but the digital allocation is roughly 10% of the total number,” BT Games said.
He also said that there appears to be a large PS5 shipment destined for mid-January.
BT Games will open pre-orders for Xbox Series X and Series S at 09:00 am on September 22.
He said that he has received a larger allocation for this console and has the option of getting more stock in case it runs out.
