JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa said Tuesday that it was important for the country to commemorate great leaders like Oliver Tambo and preserve their legacy.
Tambo would have turned 103 years old on Tuesday.
Ramaphosa unveiled the 30-foot-tall bronze statue in the outer arena of OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park.

The statue, with its hand outstretched in front of him, holds the freedom letter with the logo of the African National Congress (ANC) engraved on its jacket.
Ramaphosa said he was pleased to see a project that had been planned for a long time finally unveiled.
“By erecting this statue, we affirm the importance of preserving our heritage for the benefit of future generations. But we are also telling the world that we have not forgotten our heroes, ”said the president.
“We remember them, we want their stories to be known, and we want their lives to inspire and encourage us as we fight together for a better world.”
