CAPE TOWN – Opposition parties and trade unions said Friday that the government’s economic recovery plan presented by President Cyril Ramaphosa was disappointing and offered nothing new to South Africans.

Ramaphosa presented the plan to restore the economy at a joint session of Parliament on Thursday.

He said the plan would focus on employment, increasing local production and extending social protection for the poor.

But those in the opposition seats said the president said nothing different than the commitments he made since the start of the pandemic.

The official opposition Finance spokesman, Geordin Hill-Lewis, said the content of the recovery plan has not changed much in two years.

“You cannot keep repeating the same plans and promises year after year because they will be more urgent for the recovery of the economy. There is no progress, I think that was the biggest drop in speech. “

Cope MP Willie Madisha, a former trade unionist, says President Cyril Ramaphosa’s focus should be on job creation and local production.

“I’m very disappointed. In fact, what we hear, we’ve all heard before. He just repeated everything he said before. “

Freedom Front Plus MP Pieter Groenewald said: “He didn’t say anything he hasn’t said before. For how long should we hear that there will be infrastructure development and how long will we hear about renewable energies ”.

The COSATU union federation says the weakest link in the Recovery Plan is the government’s attitude toward state capacity, which remains largely a market-driven plan.
