DURBAN – Former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede claimed that the case against him is an attack on the African National Congress (ANC).
Gumede and 16 others face corruption charges linked to bid fraud amounting to more than 400 million rand.
She appeared in Durban Commercial Crimes Court, where the matter was postponed until December 10 for the State to complete its forensic audit report on the case.
The former mayor, and now a suspended deputy from the provincial legislature, has addressed her supporters after appearing in court on Thursday.
While she had previously said that she was being attacked because she is a strong female leader, she now said that her political party, the ANC, is being attacked through her.
“We are in war; But this war is not targeting Zandile Gumede, it is the ANC that is under attack. “
Gumede said supporting her meant defending the ANC.
“By opposing cases like this, comrades from eThekwini and other regions will save the ANC.”
She maintains that she is innocent and affirms that the state has no case against her because, as a policy, it cannot interfere in the bidding processes.
