‘We are all confused,’ Malema’s lawyer tells the court while questioning the policeman who first investigated the assault complaint

A retired police officer who initially investigated the case of common assault against EFF leader Julius Malema and MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi was questioned on Wednesday for alleged discrepancies in their evidence.

Colonel Charles Seanego, who was a lieutenant colonel in the SAPS for 42 years, was called on Wednesday to testify against Malema and Ndlozi.

The couple are on trial in Randburg magistrates court, each facing a common assault charge stemming from an incident involving Colonel Johannes Venter at the 2018 funeral of fighting stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in Fourways.

Malema and Ndlozi have pleaded not guilty to the assault charge, saying it was part of a political agenda.

AfriForum had lobbied for them to be prosecuted.

Seanego, now retired, was the investigating officer on the case. Seanego retired in March 2019 before the investigation could be concluded.

He told the court that he had been informed of a high-profile case registered at the Douglasdale Police Station.

He was investigating another case at the time.

He said he was told the case needed further investigation, and that witnesses and video images were pending, so he went to Fourways Memorial Park Cemetery to request video images.

When he received it, he sealed it.

“Then I took him to the high-tech office,” he said.

He said that all other documents were assigned to other members.
