CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape government said on Sunday there was a positive increase in student attendance in the province.

At the beginning of June, the attendance rate for seventh graders was 33% and has now risen to 77%.

By grade 12, it improved to 87%.

Provincial MP Lorraine Botha said the rising attendance rate could be attributed to the decline in COVID-19 infections, as well as reduced anxiety levels related to the pandemic.

“There are 14 weeks left in the 2020 academic year and with the nature of the mandatory phased approach, contact time is drastically reduced due to alternate grade attendance. With the amount of time remaining, students should make the most of every little bit of time. “

Botha said the provincial parliament’s standing committee on education will embark on a week of supervision at the school to gain insight into the remaining challenges experienced under the gradual approach.
