CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape is officially dealing with a resurgence of COVID-19.

The provincial health department said this is when weekly new cases increase by 20% and is what some countries may call a second wave.

The increase in infections was concentrated along the Garden Route, but is now evident in the Cape Town subway as well.

Western Cape Chief Health Physician Keith Cloete said COVID-19 infections have risen steadily since October and Cape Town has experienced more than 2,000 infections in the past seven days.

“A 52% increase in cases, which we are seeing week after week. The increase is particularly due to the resurgence of the Garden Route and Cape Metro and Cape Winelands is also starting to contribute to that. “

It has raised the alarm about hospitalizations: “The Garden Route has increased almost three times in the last two weeks, while in the Metro daily hospitalization has doubled.”

Cloete said there were signs of sustained community transmission in Cape Town.

“We have now established a resurgence in the metro, which is the largest population and the highest risk in the province in terms of the number of people with cases that can escalate very quickly.”
